Shared Insight
Turning lived experience into shared understanding
Understanding what matters to people is only the start.
This page explores how poverty is experienced in real life. It connects real lives, shared reflection and emerging insight to show what matters to people – and how this changes over time.
SIGNAL starts with individuals reflecting on what matters in their lives. As this work grows across communities and organisations, patterns begin to emerge.
Shared understanding grows from real lives.
Explore the data
A live view of what matters across people and communities.
As more Life Maps are created, patterns begin to emerge – showing shared priorities, pressures, strengths, and where support is making a difference.
This is where lived experience becomes visible, structured and useful.

From real lives to shared insight
Explore the sections below to see how real lives, shared reflection and emerging insight help create shared understanding and shape change..
Shared Reflection
These experiences are not interpreted in isolation. Practitioners, partners, communities and decision-makers reflect together to understand what is being seen – and what it means – across different people and places. This helps identify common themes, shared challenges and areas of strength.
Understanding grows through reflection.
When complexity sits in the system, not the person
People may face multiple, entangled disadvantages. But when support is organised around separate conditions, thresholds and services, the system itself can become part of the complexity.
When one problem becomes many
Poor housing rarely stays a housing problem. JS’s story shows how pressure can spread across health, finances, security and agency — and what that means through a Marmot lens on health inequalities and prevention.
People live horizontally. Systems operate vertically.
Maureen Allan explores what services miss when housing, health, transport and caring are treated separately—and how whole-life conversations can turn lived experience into shared insight.
Emerging Insights
As more Life Maps and experiences are brought together, patterns begin to form. These insights highlight what people are facing, what is changing, and what may need attention next. They help partners and wider systems learn from practice as it happens.
Patterns emerge from real lives.

Real Lives
This insight does not start with data. It starts with conversations about what matters to people, their experiences and what progress looks like in their lives. By connecting these individual perspectives, SIGNAL creates shared understanding that reflects real lives, not assumptions.
Shared Insight begins with listening.
How a Holistic Conversation converts ‘What Matters to You?’ into Agency and Action
By using Signal to explore every aspect of Tina’s life, Tina and Tristy uncovered the connections between challenges that might otherwise have remained hidden. This holistic conversation not only helped Tina identify priorities for change but also revealed an urgent practical issue whose solution has the potential to benefit many others.
When Sum Body walked through the door
Sum Body arrived at Blyth Food Bank carrying more hardship than was visible from the outside. His wife had died eighteen months earlier. His home of six years was uninhabitable - overrun with mould that had destroyed his furniture and made the place unliveable. He was...
A Lifemap, a Football Top, and a New Outlook on Life
How St Anthony’s used SIGNAL to support deeper conversations with older people, helping Liz reconnect with pride, purpose and what mattered to her.
What we are learning
The examples below illustrate the insights that can emerge when lived experience, structured reflection and shared analysis are brought together.
What matters most
Clear priorities emerge across different communities, highlighting what people need to move forward.
What helps people move forward
Progress is shaped by relationships, confidence and practical support, not just services.
Where systems need to respond differently
Insight highlights gaps and barriers, showing where support needs to adapt.
